The 2026 Northern Beef Research Update Conference (NBRUC), held in Brisbane from 10–13 March, brought together more than 350 producers, researchers, extension specialists and industry stakeholders under the theme “From Research to Results: Driving Paddock Performance.”

A central theme emerging from both the program and industry commentary was that the sector’s greatest opportunity lies not in new discoveries alone, but in embedding proven knowledge more consistently across northern production systems. This was reinforced throughout the conference, where discussions repeatedly returned to the challenge of translating research into practical, paddock-level outcomes.

Strong attention was given to rangeland management and system performance, with research highlighting the link between pasture condition, reproductive efficiency and long-term profitability. At the same time, a growing suite of technologies – from remote sensing and on-animal monitoring to decision-support tools – demonstrated new opportunities to support grazing management and improve decision-making in extensive systems.

The conference highlighted a shift in how adoption is being achieved. Peer-to-peer learning, producer demonstration sites and co-designed research models are increasingly seen as critical to driving real practice change, with producers more likely to adopt innovations validated within their own networks and regions.

Overall NBRUC 2026 underscored a clear direction for northern Australia’s rangelands: aligning research with producer priorities, strengthening extension pathways, and focusing on adoption as the key driver of productivity, resilience and sustainability.

We hope you can join us for the next NBRUC in 2029. Follow the North Australia Beef Research Council for updates at nabrc.com.au.
